Gyros are excellent. Gyro platter is a ton of food.

In terms of quality, this is obviously not one of the best restaurants in the world. On the bright side, it's big enough, friendly enough, and gives off enough of that we're part of the team vibe to bring your mount prospect little leaguers after the big win (or loss). They even have a big wall of local team awards. I'd gotta say, it's super cheap so you get a lot of food for a little money. LIke I said though, it's not the best food but if you're with the right people, it won't matter.

Thought we would try a local business after seeing an Amazon Local for it. We waited for a Tuesday with 2 for 1 hot dogs but they told us that we couldn't combine deals. Not off to a great start. Food was mediocre at best. Felt like I was eating just to eat. Flavor was lacking. Would've been one star but the service was kind. Do not recommend.

First things first, I enjoyed the food and so did my father. The reason why this review is only two stars is due to the extremely slow service and the cleanliness of the facility. They do a great job with the jumbo char dog and their french fries are very good. It would appear that as time is passing the ownership of this restaurant is aging and they are not responding to the needs of the customers. It is not the same restaurant that it was just a couple of years ago. This is a shame as this particular hotdog restaurant is just down the street from where my father lives. The next time I take my father for a hotdog, it will be to Portillo's. It's a lot further away from his home, but the quality, service and cleanliness factor is much better.

Disgustingly filthy bathroom. Can tell hasn't been cleaned in a very long time. When you see poop even on the hand dryer there is a major problem. The restaurant was unkempt. The workers were more concerned with having a good time and drinking with their friends that were there instead of cleaning. If the bathroom if that dirty, how bad is the kitchen?????? We will never be going there again!

  • Bob H.

I remember when they remodeled this place. It used to be so clean. Take a step in the bathroom if you want to pass out from the horrific stench. If the bathroom is dirty and smelly just imagine how dirty the kitchen is!!

Well this visit was little disappointing because ordered4 hot dogs everything on them and large fry and 2 drinks. Problem was buns were hard and not 1 hot dog had same thing on it and kicker frys were over cooked. And place was empty.

I'm a local and I don't see what the other locals see in this place. For those of you who said they have good hot dogs I must say you're nuts!! Dogs are terrible & expensive. $2.50 gets you 1 lukewarm dog . No fries. What kind of place doesn't offer a small fry with a $2.50 dog. It actually tastes like a hot dog you can boil on your stove top at home. No real flavor. I will say this, try their cheddar & beef croissant. Very Good!! Steer clear if you're bargain shopping. Not here!!

Stopped here once a few weeks ago and will not be back. The food was just not up to the standards set at other hot dog places in the area. Hot dogs were barely warm, fries tasted like they came out of the microwave. With so many other options for superior food, why go here?

My friends and I have been coming here for years...probably since we were kids. Our church is just down the street. I'm sure the management knows who we all are by now, since we would come in large crowds on friday nights and sunday afternoons. I live in New York now, but whenever I do come back to Chicago I try to swing by this place. Maybe it's the nostalgic memories of being in high school and looking for a place to get some grub. The burgers and hotdogs are good. So are the gyro platters. I don't recommend the greek salad. I'm questioning all these negative reviews...sure, the place isn't the most high-end: it's a classic Chicago-themed fast-food joint. If you're expecting something high class, then go out to the city. This place has "local" written all over it. Growing up in the Chicago burbs, I enjoy the reliving those old nights time to time.

Cheap, cheap and quick meal. Traditional fast food, although they do make some decent chili dogs. For what it is, a fast food restaurant, it's perfectly acceptable. However don't compare it to a 5 star restaurant. It's kept decently clean, they serve you pretty fast, its decently priced, and you're not likely to find some nasty surprise in the food. What more can you ask for from fast food? It's not like it's Charlie Trotters you're going to here. 4/5 because it gets super crowded with highschoolers and because there are other equally decent fast food options available.

I have been going here for over 10 years now! The best thing is pretty much everything! I love their cheese fries though! best cheese ever! actually real melted American cheese, No nasty nacho cheese like other places! There burgers are super yummy! And there shakes are amazing! I love their claw machine too!

I worked at Photos for 4 years and so did my sister. I think it's a huge testimony that I still go there with my family once a week. My husband says I need my photos fix.

Ok, if they would be nice to their customers and took somewhat pride in their food I would then consider 2 stars. Fake cheese for the fries, Frozen Burgers, and soggy toppings. Until this happens i'm giving them one. Your better off to spend your money at the subway a few doors down.

  • Ajay S.

Your average Hotdog and Burger fast food place, at slightly higher prices. I do like this over then other places local to the area, probably since they did a gift card offer and gave $35 for spending $100. In addition, kids meals weren't terribly pricy.

    (3)
  • Laura N.

I've been a frequent customer here since elementary school, starting with dinners with the family. I've moved out of the area but still come here for the occasional lunch with friends. The service is good, the food is excellent, the prices are extremely reasonable, and the decor is fun to look at (I've seen this restaurant grow through several restorations)! This is definitely a step up from fast food chains -- it's fast food with a little class. Kids also get free ice cream.

  • Jeff N.

the cashiers seem like they don't want to be there. there are signs everywhere "free water cups are for water only". $0.30 charge for gardinera when you buy a beef sandwich. nothing wrong with the food, but if you * don't buy the special of the day, * don't take advantage of the "$3 small fry+small soda" with your sandwich, or * don't have a "$1 off" coupon, then your meal can end up north of $10.

Why, Why , why do I keep getting sucked in? Once again, I was pinched for time and cash, right around the corner and hungry. After many mealy nasty hot dogs at this place I won't go down that road again. Although I have never had a good burger here, people keep telling me how great their burgers are. NEWSFLASH: THE BURGERS ARE BAD! Not sure if it was beef or a burnt harvest burger, so small you couldn't even send it out to a lab for testing. Dry, crappy, miniature and overpriced. I don't know why I thought this time would be any different. I don't care how convenient this place is, I'm done for good.

Not bad. Probably a 3 stars for the food, but something about going to a place named "Photo's Hot Dogs" is too quirky not to add another star to. Well lit, nice atmosphere for a fast food place. Lots of deals, like $1.49 burger on Sunday Nights or 2 burgers for the price of one on Thursday. I had a Gyro Platter and a Char Cheeseburger. I felt the charred cheeseburger was a little expensive, but the gyros platter was good. It did taste a bit more "game-like" than some, but still good. But I will never understand why so many places, this place included, sell gyros platters with enough fixings to make 2-3 sandwiches but only give one pita. Not a place to go out of the way for, but a decent place if you're in the neighborhood and need some fast food.

if you saw the deep fryer plugged up with old dirty oil and old rotting fries floating around you would never eat there again this place is a dump stay far away if you don't believe me take a peek in the kitchen see for yourself

Completely average. Except the prices which seem to add up quickly. Kids get a free micro-cone of ice cream. They are active in the community though so some of that money comes back around.

    (2)
  • Chris A.

It's an alright restaurant, the fries are way to salty. It's as if they dipped them in a vat of salt. The sandwiches are okay, the gyros is absolute mammoth. It's a typical suburban restaurant, nothing exceptional nothing to horrible.

    (2)
  • F S.

Too Expensive. They are always offering "deals", but by the time you pay for the purchase required ot get the "discount" you are immediately up to more than the regular price at most fast food outlets. Burgers and Dogs are pretty good. I love their fries. Service is OK at best.

I went here with a group for lunch during the week because we had a certificate to use specifically at this location. And I must say their Palatine location is much better. First of all, Photo's is a pretty expensive place considering they mostly advertise hot dogs, although they do have daily specials. Their hot dogs are good, but they cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.79 if my memory serves me right, which is rediculous for a hot dog! I ordered one of their specials this day, $2.99 gyros, which I felt was a good amount of meat but it was very greasy. My group also agreed that the woman taking our order seemed like she hates her job and her crabby attitude surely showed. And unlike the other location, they were strict on their policy that their free ice cream cones are only for kids. You charge $2.79 for a single hot dog and you can't give us a tiny ice cream cone that probably costs you like 10 cents!? The expensive prices and the poor service are what earned this poor rating.

I been going to Photos since Middle school (since mine was across the street) and I never had a problem and my food always delicious. Way better than a lot of burger joints. I always get a cheeseburger here and it's so filling and the gyros is delicious. I also get the chili cheese dog which is also good! The cheese fries are the best. They have a deal like everyday of the week like 2 for 1 hot dogs, free ice cream for kids, and they always give you coupons. The service has never been bad to me either, I always got my food on time and taste yummy. The place is really cute with all the pictures along the wall. I never been to the other location. And I don't thiink the food looks cheap at all and it is priced pretty good. All in all if you want a step up from burger king and other fast food, come to Photos, you won't regret it.

  • Abraham P.

The food is terrific and it's not that expensive. only problem are the people who work there. They don't care at all for you and they stole my girlfriends money. Would be 5 star if not for them.

    (4)
  • JoAnne P.

Dirty! The food is low quality and very overpriced. Maybe they should stop handing out the coupons and price the food for what its worth. They pre cook much of the food and reheat it when you order it . Its just not good. I wouldn't eat here. It's too bad..because Photos used to be one of the best, now its one of the worst.

    (1)
  • Brendan M.

not a bad dog place, get some good cheap daily specials like other places in the area. the last time i had it i was not thrilled with the food. I think it is better to eat it there than bringing it home....loses the luster. free kids ice cream is always a good thing!

As of 11/26/07 I hate the food here. ITs not that its cheap quality, well, the hamburgers are damn cheap looking. Its that the food doesn't go together well. The guys in the kitchen don't do a good job of preparing the meal. I tried the grilled chicken wrap and it was just all over the place. Way too much lettuce, not enough chicken, some cheese. They give you a small cup of dressing that you add to the wrap. Smarter would be if the lettuce was tossed with dressing and then chicken added and thrown into the wrap. I don't even care to write to them and tell them how to improve. Its weird.. neighborhood people love this place. And I'm sure alot of people would say I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm used to real Char grills. This ain't one of em. Why do I keep going? Convenience and forced via co-workers. One more thing I really hate is customer service. For instance hot dogs are on sale for 14 cents if you buy one. I didn't know about this. I called ahead and mentioned a coupon. I got there and realized the hot dog sale. The lady at the counter sighed for a moment, as if she thought, maybe I should give him the discount. She didn't say anything. I asked about the deal and she just says, well you didn't mention it on the phone, so you have to pay full price for the first two dogs because you are using a coupon. WTF!!! Another reason, I hate this place. -------------------------------------------- I've been here three times now, the first two times I thought one star for sure. I had a gyro for $2.99, & that's whats best of Photo's, their deals. They have so many deals on different days. All kinds of free shit going on. Like, free ice cream for everyone. Its a bit of soft serve on a small cone. Or free fries with any purchase for school children. With practically every order your given a redemption coupon, $1 off, on their website find more coupons to balance out the extreme pricing. Their burgers blow. Cheap thin patties which they readily charge almost $5 . I figure if the meat is that thin, why not offer double cheeseburgers. I ordered this one burger, the Monster burger, (just realized from the website) its supposed to be a double cheeseburger. When I ate there, it was a single burger, very thin. With about a pound plus of lettuce, tomato's and red onions, lite bacon and ketchup and mustard. Minus out the toppings you don't want and your left with nothing. I ate it all and was still hungry. I needed another burger to satisfy myself and typically I don't eat ALOT of food. On my list of char houses, I would pass on Photo's. If you like kids, you'll love photos. There always seems to be kids running in and out. If your on a lunch break, you need more time than a 1/2 hour to order, get your meal and eat. Call ahead. Why didn't anyone stop that little chubby kid from kicking around spoons and ketchup packets! Annoying!

My local go to joint for gyros. Good but nothing special. They always seem to be running specials for one thing or another. Lots of other typical hot dog joint food but I stick to the gyros.

Photo's used to have great food back when the greek guy first opened the place. This guy Photopoulas or something like that had a real good thing going with lots of business. He even lived in the neighborhood, and my daughter used to play with their daughter. Then, the food and atmosphere were great. I truly think he must have sold the place to some dumbass who had their own ideas of what the place should be like. Photo's has been re-invented by somebody who should have left the place like it was. It just might go the way of Lucy's Old Neighborhood.

This place is dirty ! Ladies bathroom VERY dirty - not just a bad day, it's not been cleaned well for a very long time. Stopped in for a hotdog, got fries n a drink, almost $8. Not cheap. Food was ok, mediocre at best. People working here NOT friendly at all. This one's off my list for sure.

I came back (with a $10 Groupon) because of the nostalgia/childhood memory factor: I went here as a kid with my family, as my grandparents lived right around the corner. Like a few others mentioned, it really used to be a family restaurant/little league gathering place, always hoppin' in the summer with people hanging out and eating. Y'know, the kind of place that gives you the warm fuzzies. So I was, admittedly, really stoked to take a trip down Memory Lane. Since I'm no longer really big on hotdogs + burgers, I opted to try their new veggie and fish menu items. First on my list were the Tilapia Tacos, but was told by the gruff manager (?) dude that they were out of tilapia. I ordered the Alaskan Salmon Burger ($5.45) and Hummus Wrap ($6) instead. Got a side of fries ($2) and a drink. I asked if the wrap would keep for leftovers (lunch) and he said it would; however doubted so after I learned of ingredients (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onions = high water content). I got it anyway for dinner. FYI, it's on a flour tortilla and has mozzarella cheese. Verdict: Just OK. It's obviously very light (veggies + tortilla), but really lacked any sort of flavor. IMO, the mozzarella is also an odd choice - feta would probably be better. I planned to eat the salmon burger the next day for lunch, then, but tried it while it was still warm. Verdict: Pass on it! The bun was nice and soft, but the patty was gross. Not only was it dry, but the flavor was really off. I hate throwing away food, but there's no way I was eating the rest of it. The fries were fine. The bathrooms were dirty, and the giant TP roll was just sitting on the tank. (Empty cardboard in the dispenser.) It smelled, too, and not the "Someone just used the facilities" kind; rather, it was the "I haven't had a thorough cleaning with bleach/disinfectant in a loooong time" kind. The rest of the place appeared to be clean, but all but one table (mom + young daughter) were vacant. Everyone else who showed up while I was there (about 8 people, some together) took their orders to go. I was lucky enough to get ice for my fountain drink, but a lady (with two large cups) a few people after me was not. When she requested ice, a young male worker brought out a metal tray of ice and said "There's nothing I can do" (meaning to load it in the machine). I watched her struggle with getting ice in the cup. Really awkward. She got a few pieces in before she gave up. As I was waiting for my food, a family came back in with their young girls stating that the ice cream they received was too liquidy. Gruff Manager (?) Dude gave them two little cones, but a half cup filled with the watery ice cream. Aside from the food, I just got a really big "no one gives a sh!t" vibe. And it's really, really sad that such a great place just seems to have gone downhill so much. I'm pretty sure the only thing keeping them afloat at this point are their daily deals (cheap hot dogs, sandwiches, and beer) and the Groupon (which Gruff Manager? Guy seemed a bit disgruntled about..) If anything, my visit was a reminder that some things are just better left in the past.

Quality consistent food, especially the combo mambo (beef and sausage) sandwich. Though there are many choices out there, I always come back here when visiting the area and Photos never disappoints. 3.5 stars for good food, inside atmosphere, and friendly service.

Had a gyro from here today that the wife brought home for dinner and it was by the worst I have ever had. The meat was bite size dried out bites and the cucumber sauce was was not thick and tasty at all. I will never be back again. Stan

Went here because I had an old groupon to use. Had a monster cheeseburger, the burger was not monstrous at all, probably about the size of a quarter pounder. The American cheese had good flavor but the rest of the burger was dried out. The fries were seasoned good but tasted like they were frozen ones. Overall average burger and fries, no where near as good as portillos or paradise pup.

Been here a few times and its a good place to grab some greasy food. I love their pizza puff. It must be so bad for you but tastes so good. They do have a lot of good deals, but I wouldn't say all their food is a good deal. For being in the suburbs I would say its a little over priced on some things. I have also had the burger which is pretty good. Plenty of seating and parking, clean and customer service is definitely a hit or miss.

wow, terrible terrible terrible....... my cheeseburger was a tiny pattie that they got from the freezer, not even a quarfter pounder size patty... so bad..... the gyro platter was supposed to have double meat, i dont think so and it was so dry .....wow, no wonder i havent made the long distance trip to this joint, so bad.... its a shame because there wasnt anything else that looked appealing in this mount prospect area either... such a sad experience...

Middle of the road. Mediocre. Average. Not bad, not great. On a scale of 1-10, it's a solid 5. There are better places. There are worse places. It's OK. Your best bet is to get a Groupon deal and check it out for yourself. You won't spend a lot of money and won't feel as ripped off than if you paid the full price. The cheeseburger is good. The beef sammich (with cheese and sweet peppers) and the hot dogs are fair. Eat the french fries and onion rings quickly...they get cold fast. The restaurant is larger than the average independent fast food place. Lots of photos on the walls...looks like they sponsor youth sports teams.

Good food, daily deals. See their website for all that info. Great deals for highschoolers. Love the fact the number one regular complains about the food. If it's so bad don't come here. Duh.

I heard there was a buy one get one free on hot dogs so I decided to try this place. I walked up to the counter and there was a very lifeless woman standing there. I mentioned the special I had heard about and before I finished my sentence she went on listing all the specials they had in a very lifeless, robotic manner. I completed my order and before I even sat down my food was ready so that was nice. The hot dog was decent for the price. Normally I love pickles on hot dogs, but this one was very sweet. I ordered a small batch of fries and those were pretty good. I kept hearing that woman call out peoples order numbers in that lifeless, dull voice. It's okay for the price or if you're starving and need to eat now! Other than that I've had way better hot dogs and way better service before.

Ah Photos. So many memories. But I have to write this review about the present, not the past. I come here for Italian beef and gyros. They pioneered the mini gyro. Great idea as a side!! They also do a nice burger. The fries are huge. You self-serve your soda, so you can refill before you leave. My daughter says the kids free ice cream is teeny, but it's actually a great size for a three year old. They have a large dining area, and outdoor seating. In recent years they have expanded their menu, not always a good idea. Stick with what you do best, please. Last time I checked, restrooms were tired and in need of a remodel. Great collection of old photos on the wall--Bears, Marilyn Monroe twice, Clark Gable twice, Tyrone Power. These were oldies when they opened, good luck identifying them all now, unless you watch TCM constantly. (I see you Ann Margaret, you local girl made good!). They do serve beer and wine, and have plenty of TVs with sports on.

This place is great. It's a nice alternative to Portillo's. Great burgers and great fries. Been here a bunch of times. Only wish it was a little bit closer to me.

Easy, clean and kid-friendly, complete with free mini soft serve cones for kids and ample seating indoor and out. Prices are less than what you might expect. The food itself, however, isn't top shelf -- if you're looking for foodie fare, this isn't it. But if you have hungry kids that want a hot dog and fries and soft serve, this is it.

    (3)
  • Bam M.

Cockroaches in the bathroom. Flies around the soda machine. That's how I will begin this review. I did not use a Groupon, just decided to take my wife and daughter here one afternoon to give it a try. Needless to say, I regret it. Not only because of the above (and that was enough). I love supporting local businesses and we went on a Sunday where they have $1.50 burger specials. Instead of ordering that, I ordered a beef and cheddar croissant for $6.50. Well, the "beef" looked like ham and the cheese was shredded cheddar you would put on a salad and not melted. We also wanted to try one of their "specialities" and got loaded fries. I think the sour cream was old because my wife and I felt sick for 2 days afterwards. It's pretty challenging to screw up a hot dog joint, but the lack of cleanliness and the quality of food here does not make up for a Groupon or any daily special. I would not go here again for free.

  • Jake M.

Photo's is practically a neighborhood institution. It's always crowded and extremely popular among kids, especially since they get free ice cream. Despite this, the food is very mediocre. The natural casing Vienna beef hot dog lacks snap, and the fries are unremarkable. The gyros is prepared well, but it's just Kronos. The burgers are supposed to be really good, but I know they probably aren't, considering their Italian beef is written as Italy beef on the menu. Also, don't forget how overpriced the place is. Pretty much a rip off.

  • David B.

I used to eat here when they first opened. The food was fresh, well made and quality. Recently, I visited my old neighborhood and couldn't help but stop in for nostalgia's sake. BAD idea! The decor leaves a lot to be desired. The place used to have a neighborhood hotdog joint feel and was a gathering place for the local little league or pee wee football team. Now it seems that they have gotten a bit too big for their britches the gaudy decor reminds me of something out of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" Now, lets get to the food. First, the menu is too big for them to be really good at any one thing and as a previous poster the closing off of the kitchen from the rest of the place makes me feel like they are hiding something. Second the name of the restaurant is Photos Hotdogs. If you are going to call yourself a hotdog place the hotdog should at least be decent and you better be able to make some fries. This place can seem to do neither. The fries were cold and flavorless. and the dog was limp with an over application of condiments. The first day this place opened my friends and I ran across from River Trails for free ice cream and this was our munchie go to throughout high school so its really sad to see how far this place has fallen. Jim needs to get out while there is still something left of the name to sell.

I pretty much stopped going here when a friend of mine called the restaurant and asked for the owner as he was seeking help for a restaurant mgt class he was enrolled in. He just wanted to ask a few questions, nothing more. The owner (or whoever answered the phone) listened to him for about 15 seconds, then said "not interested" and hung up on him. But I was doing something nearby and thought I'd go in after a 5 year hiatus. Used to order the gyros there which were OK, but I'm trying to cut back a little, so I opted for an Italian Beef. It was pretty mediocre. Fries were mediocre too. One thing that surprised me was that they've kind of closed up their kitchen a little since the last time I was there. Used to be able to see the whole line, now it's a cashier window and a pickup window. The old way added atmosphere to the place. This way makes me feel like they have something to hide. Probably will look for other options when dining in the area next time.

I had a amazon local coupon and tried the place for the first time today and wasn't impressed at all. The employees did not make you feel welcome. I went to use the women's rest room and one toliet had been overflown. Water was everywhere. I went to the 2nd stall and turned around and left the bathroom. Yuck! The food was just ok. The cucumber sauce for the gyros was too watery. Wasn't impressed. The staff was sitting eating when I went to get some sauce. I had to wait for them to help me. The tables needed to be cleaned around us as drinks etc were left on unoccupied tables. They weren't busy so staff should have used their time wisely. Needless to say I will not be eating at this place again.
